Watab Township was officially organized in 1858 and takes its name from the nearby Watab River (also known historically as Watab Creek), a name derived from an Ojibwe word.  Located along the Mississippi River in Benton County, the area's rich natural resources and river access made it an important location for Native American communities, early fur traders, and settlers during Minnesota's territorial years.

Today, Watab Township blends its historic roots with a strong sense of community.  While the township has grown and developed over the years, it continues to preserve its rural character, scenic river landscapes, and appreciation for the people and events that shaped its history.
